Event Details

The Sao Joao celebration, part of Goa’s Portuguese tradition, occurs at the start of the monsoon season. This Christian feast is widely celebrated in North Goa, but not so much in the southern half of the state. It is particularly popular among young people in Goa areas. During this day, young people wear crowns made of fruits and leaves known as ‘kopels.’ They also dive into a well for amusement. During the feast of St John, the Baptist young men in Goa dive into wells, ponds, and streams to retrieve gifts tossed in by older members of the society. People dressed in kopels and colorful costumes frequently gather near a stream to greet lavishly adorned boats and floats.
